Jamelle Bouie: Sanders Looks To Be Quite Electable

NYT opinion columnist Jamelle Bouie said Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation” roundtable that Bernie Sanders “appears to be quite electable based on the measures used for everyone else.”

JAMELLE BOUIE: I can’t imagine — the kinds of people who run for president, right, are not the kinds of people who are going to say to themselves, “well, I guess for the good of the party and someone else’s political prospects, I’m going to drop out,” right, “to make sure this candidate I don’t think can win, can win.” I think it’s worth saying in that regard, that the analogy to Donald Trump falls apart when it comes to favorability at this stage of the race. Sanders in the last poll I saw, 70% of Democrats have a favorable view of Sanders. That’s higher than any other candidates in the race, and for all the talk of reconstituting the Obama coalition has been the drumbeat the past three years. Sanders seems to be the one doing it, right? We saw this in Nevada, pulling together a coalition of union households and minority voters and working-class voters and young voters into something that looks like an electoral juggernaut. The certainty among the Democratic establishment, such as it is, that Sanders is unelectable runs into the fact that, looking at what we know so far, he appears to be quite electable, based on the measures used for everyone else.
