The Wisconsin State Journal reports that protesters in Madison tore down two statues, assaulted a Democratic state senator, and attempted to start a fire inside a city municipal building after a black man was arrested for very loudly protesting in a restaurant on Tuesday afternoon. That evening, protesters marched from the county jail downtown to the state capitol, blocking traffic and promising that this would not be a peaceful protest. They tore down one statue called “Forward,” the state motto, and another of Col. Hans Christian Heg, an abolitionist who died fighting for the Union in the Civil War, and dragged them into Lake Monona. Later, a group of protesters attacked State Sen. Tim Carpenter, D-Milwaukee, when he tried to take a picture. “I don’t know what happened … all I did was stop and take a picture,” Carpenter told a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter. “…and the next thing I’m getting five-six punches, getting kicked in the head.”
